Keep Your Negativity to Yourself

Don't try to trample my dreams just because they aren't yours. (because I know parts of it are a tad hard to read)

So basically what I mean by this is that if you have goals and aspirations for your life, whatever they may be, that's great. Everyone is different and everyone wants different things. But if someone else's dream doesn't match yours, don't be an ass about it and try to talk them out of it, unless you know the bottom is about to fall out of their future career and they don't know that yet, or some other equally-legitimate reason. Don't you think there's enough negativity and hopelessness in the world as it is?

Personal example: I went back to school for a nursing degree. I just started a couple months ago, and as far as the schoolwork is concerned, I'm already SO over it for reasons too numerous to list. However, my most basic career aspiration is to be a wound care nurse and eventually get my doctorate of nursing practice. But then this bitch who had a bad experience with the respiratory therapy program decided to try to talk me out of becoming a nurse. I told her what I went back to school for and she asked, "Do you really want to shoot people up for a living?" I responded by telling her I wanted to specialize in wound care, and she retorted, "That's even worse," and went on this diatribe as to why I shouldn't be a wound care nurse.

What right does anyone have to try to deter people from their goals? I do not believe I have a right to an education; I'm currently taking out financial aid and claiming half-price-tuition benefits (my mom is a retiree from the university I attend). I will be in debt over my head when I'm finished. But I'm the one who chose to go back to school because that's what I want to do. If you aren't paying my tuition, if you aren't paying for my books/supplies, and if you aren't paying for everything else I need for nursing school, then you have no right WHATSOEVER to try to wreck my aspirations. Just because it didn't work for you doesn't mean those of us who want to pursue it shouldn't be allowed to. /rant
